Legacy to Lifted: A New Chapter in Jersey City’s Cannabis Scene

A new addition to Jersey City’s growing cannabis industry has arrived on the West Side. Legacy to Lifted, a family-run dispensary, officially opened on February 15, 2025, making it the 16th licensed cannabis retail store in the city.

From Legacy to Legal: Christopher Broderick’s Journey

Leading the dispensary is Christopher Broderick, a lifelong Jersey City resident whose transition from the underground cannabis market to legal business ownership is a testament to determination. Raised in the Heights neighborhood, Broderick’s early experiences with cannabis were shaped by personal struggles and legal challenges. Despite serving a 27-month prison sentence for marijuana-related offenses, he remained committed to the plant and worked toward a future in the regulated market.

“I’ve always had a deep passion for cannabis, and I wasn’t going to give up on it,” Broderick said, reflecting on his path from the illicit trade to a fully licensed business.

A Community-Focused Location

Situated at 490 West Side Avenue, the dispensary occupies a renovated storefront that was previously a nutrition shop. Its location, nestled between Boyd Avenue and Union Street, is expected to draw steady foot traffic, especially with new residential developments in the area.

The grand opening event brought together local officials and community members to celebrate the milestone. Broderick, joined by his older brother Edward and business partner Adrian, expressed his appreciation for the support that helped turn his vision into reality. “This is a family business. It’s a dream come true!” he said.

Curated Cannabis and a Commitment to Community

Visitors stepping into Legacy to Lifted are greeted by an eye-catching mural, created by a pair of local artists. The artwork represents Broderick’s personal journey—an evolution from his roots in the legacy market to becoming a legitimate entrepreneur.

The dispensary carries a handpicked selection of high-quality cannabis brands, including Niche, which is known for premium flower, and local producer Onyx. Customers can also explore products up close at the bud bar, where they can inspect and smell the different strains before making a purchase.

Beyond its role as a retailer, Legacy to Lifted has taken an active role in the community. The dispensary has supported local events, youth sports initiatives, and employment programs, particularly for individuals reentering the workforce after legal troubles.

Overcoming Obstacles and Looking to the Future

Opening a dispensary in New Jersey comes with challenges, and Broderick faced his share—from finding the right location to navigating state regulations. He credits the support of officials like Ward B Councilwoman Mira Prinz-Arey and the Jersey City Inclusion and Diversity Office for helping him bring Legacy to Lifted to life.

Now that the doors are open, Broderick envisions the dispensary as more than just a business. He wants to cultivate a welcoming space where customers feel a personal connection, emphasizing that cannabis is not just a product but a force for positive change.
